Cheek fillers could be your solution to looking younger
Filler
treatments are famously used for lip augmentations. But they can do a
lot more than just plump your pout. Many are fighting back against signs of
aging with the help of cheek fillers.
“The cheek region is one of the foundations of support in the
face,” said Dr. Young Cho, a plastic surgeon in Houston. “As we get older, we
start to lose this support. Dermal fillers are a great way to restore both
tissue support and lost volume from the aging process.”
Wanting to reduce facial hollowness that leaves you
constantly looking tired is nothing new, according to Dr. Richard Fleming, a
facial plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Previously, many patients did so by
getting cheek implants placed through an incision from inside their mouth.
Fillers now offer a far less intrusive alternative.
“Fillers have become more popular because longer-lasting
results are possible with some products, it is a relatively easy procedure with
minimal recovery, and there are few risks when done by an experienced
physician,” said Dr. Fleming.
That doesn’t necessarily mean you should run out tomorrow and
book your cheek filler appointment. To get the best results, you need to have
volume loss in your face, according to Dr. Cho. Otherwise, you could end up
with an unnatural look.
If you do have volume loss, the first step is getting a full
facial consultation. Cheek fillers can be effective, with an 86% Worth It
Rating as of this story, but the best results often come from a combination of
cosmetic treatments, like fillers or toxins along the jawline and fat transfer
to add additional fullness.
“Simply correcting the aging cheek can often result in an
imbalanced or unnatural appearance to the face,” said Dr. Cho. “Cheek fillers
may accentuate the hollowing in the temples. This can often be anticipated and
corrected with a full face treatment plan.”
If you decide cheek fillers are right for you, your doctor
will likely use either Voluma or Restylane Lyft. Both are hyaluronic acid
fillers that last up to two years, according to Dr. Fleming. Sculptra and
Radiesse are other options for cheek fillers.
“Sculptra is a great option to replenish volume loss in the
cheeks, but may not be as effective in building support to the cheek,” Dr. Cho
said. “Radiesse is also a popular cheek filler, but is based on hydroxyapatite
[a naturally occurring form of calcium] and cannot be reversed easily should
there be an unintended outcome.”
No matter what filler you choose, your best result will
likely come from finding an experienced injector, and one who focuses on the
face.
“I always recommend that patients consult with a surgeon
experienced with fillers because injections are very easy to do, but it is
difficult to get the ideal result, especially when contouring the mid-face,”
Dr. Fleming said.
