How to reverse cosmetic treatments, from lip fillers to rhinoplasty

How to reverse procedures.

Kylie Jenner made headlines for her near-billionaire status, but that’s not the only thing that has people talking. After a follower on Instagram said she looked “like the old Kylie,” she revealed she’d had her lip fillers dissolved, and the post went viral. Jenner hasn’t explained her decision, but she’s reportedly enjoying her more natural look.

People decide to reverse cosmetic treatments for a lot of reasons, from health concerns or simply not liking their results. Fortunately, most of the time you don’t have to live with an outcome you don’t like. We spoke with Dr. Richard Fleming, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, about a few of the most popular cosmetic procedures and options for reversing them.

He advises that “the first step any individual should take before an enhancement is to select an experienced physician who will show examples of patients who look like them, so they can avoid undesirable results.”

Lip fillers

There’s no cookie-cutter approach to lip fillers, and sometimes, your results just aren’t as imagined. Thankfully, reversing lip fillers is fairly a simple process.
“After a thorough consultation, it is always safer to select fillers that can be reversed with the injection of products like Vitrase,” said Dr. Fleming. “Reversal is not easy or cheap and may require more than one injection.”

Vitrase is an injectable enzyme that speeds the natural breakdown of hyaluronic acid based fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane. If you are considering reversal, most providers will recommend waiting at least a week before deciding. Swelling and bruising could be contributing to your undesirable result, which will fade over the next week.

According to prices reported by people on RealSelf, you should expect to spend around $400 to reverse lip fillers.

Botox

One common question asked about Botox is whether it can be reversed. The short answer is no; it just takes time and patience.

“Botox and Dysport cannot be reversed, but fortunately, the duration of the changes from these injections are very short — typically about three months,” said Dr. Fleming.

You might not be happy with your results for a few months, but your muscles will eventually return to their pre-treatment appearance.

Breast implants

Breast implant removal can be done for a variety of reasons, like implant malfunction, capsular contracture, and dissatisfaction with breast size. It’s also common for women who have sagging due to aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations.

“Reversing breast augmentation is more complicated because the breasts may sag after the implants are removed, depending on the size of the implants and how long they have been present,” said Dr. Fleming.

According to prices reported by people on RealSelf, you should expect to spend around $4,500 on breast implant removal.

Microblading

Microblading treatments apply semi-permanent ink in fine strokes to mimic natural eyebrows. It typically lasts one to three years.

“Microblading provides temporary results,” said Dr. Fleming. “If the patient is not happy with the result, they have the choice of waiting until the pigment fades or having laser treatments to eliminate the pigment.”

A popular laser to fade microblading pigment is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Some people report issues with eyebrow hairs becoming thinner right after laser treatments, but they eventually grow back. The results of a laser treatment will also depend on the type of ink used.

Immediately after microblading, eyebrows do look darker than expected, but they fade by about 50% over the next several weeks. You will likely need to wait 6 to 8 weeks after your procedure to get a laser treatment. Most professionals recommend waiting anyway, to make sure you still don’t like the final results before going through the long and costly journey of removing your ink.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty results can be unpredictable, even if you were able to see a morphed before and after computer image. If your nose ended up too small, a revision rhinoplasty will require harvesting cartilage from the septum, ear, or ribs to build size. A nose that’s still too big is typically easier to correct.

“Rhinoplasty revisions are done when the desired goals were not completely achieved,” said Dr. Fleming. “If a patient ever asked to restore their original appearance, I would recommend a revision to refine the nasal appearance, but not a reversal to restore the original undesirable nasal size, contour, or proportions.”
